John Biddle's Twofold Scripture Catechism (1654)

Introductory Notes to this year 2001 retype.

It is believed that there are only two remaining original copies of Biddle's catechism which were not burnt by the authorities of the day.

A photocopy of the original copy held in Edinburgh, was kindly provided by John James, a brother in Christ, who lives in England. This version has been typed from that photocopy.

To keep this copy as authentic as possible, all of John Biddle's 17th Century spelling has been retained. Where this has been done the word has been highlighted in BLUE letters to distinguish it from spelling errors which may be left over from the proof reading process.

In some cases where the photocopy has not quite covered all the page, it has been necessary to guess at the missing letters. Where this has been done, the text has been highlighted in RED letters.

In order to make it more readable for the 21st Century, the type face has been "updated" so that the lower case "S" is reproduced as "s" instead of something that looks more like an "f".

The original printer had hyphenated many words at the end of a line or a page, to make it easier to "justify" the text during manual type setting. This version does not use hyphenation for this purpose.

For this HTML version, it has not been practical to retain Biddle's original page layout.

Otherwise, it is as faithful to the original as our sometimes "dyslexic proof reading" permits!
